Political Infidelities

The wealthy and powerful may possess everything but a monogamous mind. In recent months, we’ve been bombarded with stories about men in politics stepping out on their marriages to have an affair. It may appear that the infidelity trend is a recent occurrence in politics but you’ll be surprised how far back the stories go. Let’s take a look, shall we?

A timeline

-- In 1980, Newt Gingrich was caught having an affair with Marianne Ginther, later becoming his second wife. In the mid-90's, he got caught cheating again - his second mistress was House of Representatives staffer Callista Bisek, who's currently Gingrich's third wife. Publicly addressing his past indiscretions, he said:
"There's no question at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate ... Sometimes you feel so passionately about America that you need to have some extramarital affairs"."

-- In 1998, President Bill Clinton got caught up in a scandal alongside White House intern Monica Lewinsky - first denying and later admitting he had strayed. The scandal led to Clinton's impeachment because he had lied about the affair under oath.

-- In 2008, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi denied any involvement with the much younger Noemi Letizia. November 2010 brought on another infidelity accusation, this time with Karima El Mahroug [better known as Ruby Rubacuoti]. Berlusconi has vehemently denied the affair.

-- In June 2009, senator John Ensign resigned his position after admitting he had an affair with the wife of a close friend, both of whom the politician was working with during his Presidential campaign.

-- In May 2011, thanks to the news publication The Los Angeles Times, Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted to fathering a child, 14 years prior, with the family's housekeeper Mildred Baena. The actor and ex California governor said:
"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago."

-- Again in May 2011, congressman Anthony Weiner mistakenly posted on his Twitter a lewd photograph meant for his mistress' eyes only. What followed was the 'sexting' scandal heard around the world! After a few weeks, Weiner admitted to more indiscretions with several other women he'd met online. Ultimately, the admission was followed by the congressman's public resignation.

What are these high-power individuals doing wrong?
