Gleeden recommends a cinema outing to watch Last Night!
Massy Tadjedin goes behind the camera to direct Last Night, A story of love and infidelity and a romantic drama… so Gleeden.
New York. A happy couple. A perfect union : Joanna and Michael. No clouds on the horizon, no fear of the future. At least, apparently… and until the temptation is too much to handle. Unexpected and unforeseeable meetings are going to force the couple to take decisions.
The story takes place within 36 hours. Michael (Sam Worthington) and Joanna (Keira Knightley), a couple of 30 year olds, live in New York and have been married for 4 years. During a dinner, Joanna notices that her husband is not indifferent to Laura’s charms (Eva Mendes), his new and charming colleague, with whom he has to leave the next day on a business trip to Philadelphia. During Michael’s absence, Joanna revives an old love in a cafe, Alex (Guillaume Canet). They then decide to see eachother again...
Last Night is a modern story which puts a couple in all its complexity and fragility up against the temptation of infidelity. Being comfortable with the taboos on this subject, Massy Tadjedin decides to root out the evil by talking freely because, beyond behaviour and speech regulations, the main problem in infidelity is, in extra-marital dating, the question of you and your couple.
The director’s aim was not to judge, but to show the real flaws and weaknesses of the characters, who are, after all, human beings like others, in real life and in great numbers on Gleeden. The character’s feelings are constantly at the centre of the film. The spectator becomes as much a witness, as an observer of the intimacy in extra-marital relationships of the couples and their development.
This couple who, could be seen as the perfect couple, or the perfect love, prove to us that nothing is for sure and that love, even when built on a stable relationship, can change at any moment. The development of feelings, an ex-lover who we still think of, a certain form of frustration in a couple’s relationship, a new meeting… are some of the causes of infidelity shown in the film.
A realistic story, which could happen to anyone because, as Last Night shows us, no one is knows for sure!

Is a gene responsible for infidelity and one night stands?
Infidelity is a subject that is being study in many scientific fields in the United States. According to a recent study, the chemistry of the brain could make someone be unfaithful. According to some American researchers, certain genes stimulate infidelity. Certain people would therefore be « genetically susceptible » to be unfaithful.
